Classical Literature

A Virtual Library of Classical Literature

Images & Outlines

If you were lured to this page with the expectation that this page dealt with strictly classical literature, you are due an apology; for as you see, there is more here than classical literature. Academics would say that I had a mixture of Classical, Neoclassical, Romantic and other literature. For the purpose of this page, my definition of classical literature is much more loose: simply any literature of enduring value. I would title these Great Books if Maynard Hutchins and Mortimer Adler had not already claimed that title for Britannica, Inc; but great books they are.

Listed below are 3500+ works of literature written between 2500 BCE and 2004 CE - all are written or translated into English and are presently available as etexts on the www. The collection is a work in progress; when it is completed (if ever), it should be approximately twice its present size. See the
notes near the bottom for sources. Links are provided to link directly to the sources; however, you may find an occasional dead link as URLs are changed, moved or are deleted. Alternative sources may be located through most www search engines. If you can't locate a source, e-mail me with a request - I'll send you a copy as an e-mail attachment (if it isn't copyrighted - most aren't). The author list near the bottom of this page represents the presently contemplated extent of author inclusion. I expect to add another 100 authors before the list is completed, and I expect the list to be segmented into separate alphabetic pages.

For an interesting listening experience and an automated means for converting text to audio books, try the Read Please program at readplease.com. Several versions are available, including a free, downloadable version.

Author (1) Title (2) Year (3) Filename (4) Location/Size (5) Source (6)

  Notes:

(1) Authors often published works or were known under pseudonyms; examples are:

Jane Austen: Anonymous
Charles L. Dodgson: Lewis Carroll
William Makepeace Thackeray: Michael A. Titmarsh, Ikey Solomons
Jean Baptiste Poquelin: Moliere
Marian Evans: George Eliot
Publius Virgilius Maro: Virgil

(2) Titles may be abbreviated ; example: Descarte’s Discourse on the Method: Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting the Reason, and Seeking Truth in the Sciences

(3) This may be the year written or a year of publication. The symbols "<" and ">" should be interpreted as on or before and on or after, respectively. The "~" symbol should be interpreted as meaning approximately.

(4) The file name extension provides a clue to the format of the work; examples: pdf (portable document format): Adobe Acrobat; hlp: Windows help file; zip: compressed ASCII or html text; txt: ASCII text; htm or html: web browser file. The file name which is listed here may not be the same as that at the source. Generally, files obtained from Project Gutenberg retain the same name, but files downloaded from sources which segmented a work have either been zipped into one file, or copied and pasted into one wordpad document and renamed. Generally, the files from the Perseus Digital Library, which have been segmented for citation purposes, have had their segments copied and pasted in sequence into a single wordpad (.rtf) document. I have zipped many of these for economy of storage, especially if the original file was greater than 100 kb in size.

(5) The files are stored on a series of CDR disks, eg: LIT01, LIT02, etc.; the size of the document in kb or mb provides an indication of book length.
